Environmental Outreach Initiatives
Every year, Manitoulin Metal is focusing on having a positive impact on the environment through FIRST Robotics. We are excited about our partnerships with other groups in the school, community, and world. We are holding a battery drive, organizing e-waste collection, developing an invasive species prevention plan, fundraising for clean water, enhancing our Eco-schools certification, and participating in bee revitalization of Natural habitat with a World Wildlife Fund grant.
We incorporate environmental stewardship into robot design, build, team management, and business. We recently published a children's book to improve youth literacy, accessibility to STEM, and environmental themes. Furthermore, Manitoulin Metal team members are taking leadership in environmental issues through composting, recycling, and plastic waste reduction. We are sending sustainable action plans to businesses and event hosts advocating for reducing carbon footprints. The team also published a sustainability toolkit in 5 languages that teaches all FIRST teams how to reach or exceed carbon neutrality. Manitoulin Metal has been carbon neutral for the past 3 seasons.
Battery Drive
We collected over 5000 batteries over the course of one week. Did you know every part of a battery can be recycled?
Shoreline and Community Clean Up
Students from the MSS robotics team are currently working on a design for a ditch-cleaning robot, but for now, human hands will have to do the trick.
